Esterio Segura Jr

"My work is based on the search to reduce the image to the bare essential for a story to be told. I pursue the essence: a gesture, a shadow, a horizon, a silence. In this purification, color and composition become absolute protagonists, they are what holds the story of my work without ornament or excess.

The color, more than formal resource, functions as an emotional atmosphere. Each chromatic plane marks a space of contemplation where the form, even in its simplicity, is loaded with narrative tension. Thus, human figures, objects, landscapes and colors themselves are transformed into symbols.

Each work is an exercise in synthesis: an attempt to distill the everyday to arrive at a state of quietness, where the minimal becomes indispensable and where painting, in its silence, narrates what cannot be said in any other way.”   —    Esterio Segura Jr

Esterio Segura

Esterio Segura Mora is one of the leading figures in the contemporary Cuban art scene. He has approached his artistic production over the past thirty years as an investigative process, developed through projects that touch on different themes.  Utilizing a variety of media; from drawing and painting to sculpture, photography and installation, he reflects upon the complexities of contemporary Cuban society. Segura delivers his social critique with humor and satire, at times evoking controversy. Embracing pop culture, Afro-Cuban influences, religious iconography and eroticism, he celebrates the beauty and ingenuity of the island while challenging the barriers that isolate and separate its people.

In speaking about his work, "Hybrid of Chrysler" at the 57th Venice Biennale, a Chrysler with wings, Esterio calls the work "an invitation (for Cubans) to the magic of going beyond the limit of the waters of the island, to realize their own dreams with a symbol of success: the American limousine as an object of worship and idolatry, a sex symbol, a symbol of power.
