OSMEIVY ORTEGA

Osmeivy Ortega lives and works in Havana.  In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious National Printmaking Award in Cuba.  He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) and subsequently, as a professor there, fostered a renewed interest in progressive printmaking techniques.  His work is dominated by his connection to animals and the natural world, with each "portrait" speaking to a metaphysical sense of shared emotions between animals and humans.

Ortega has exhibited widely in Cuba, the United States, Mexico and Europe.  In February of 2015, he was a resident at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM.

Artist Statement

"I enjoy the physical work of carving wood and working with wood to create his artwork. I  draw a lot of inspiration from the ferns that grow abundantly in Cuba.  My intention for people, when they see my work is that they see something about Cuba.  It’s an amazing country with a lot of culture. We have amazing artists and intelligent people. I am proud to be Cuban.”
