Flavio Garciandía

Flavio Garciandía is one of Cuba’s leading and most influential artists who played a crucial role in the development of artistic expression in the 70’s and 80’s in Cuba.

After graduating from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana in 1973, he went on to teach there for the next ten years, encouraging and informing a new generation of Cuban artists.

In 1984, he was a co-founder of the Havana Biennial. He went on to represent Cuba in biennials in Venice, San Paulo, Havana and Sydney.

He received important Fellowships from the Academie des Beaux Arts in Paris, the DAAD in Kassel, Germany and from the  Guggenheim Foundation in New York.

He is currently preparing for a major retrospective this September at MARCO, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico.

In 2000, Flavio had a one person exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Art. We are thrilled to be able to share his work with New Mexico once again.

In speaking about his creative process, Flavio wrote, 

“I cannot nor do I want to define my work, or suggest possible paths; these would be sterile and weakening.  

The work’s sudden changes of form and style are a response to the weariness of the same old thing.  

Instead, there is a morbid curiosity, an eagerness to surprise myself, to place improvisation and the unexpected at the top,

ironically mocking notions of unity, identity and coherence:  pure jazz. It is an ongoing self portrait.”
